The Missouri
Compromise’s parts are:
- No slavery north of
bottom border of Missouri with the exception of Missouri. In other words, the rest of the Louisiana
Purchase will not have slavery’.
- Territories that
protect slavery under their new state constitutions (slave states) and
those that forbid it under their new state constitutions (free states)
thereafter come into the Union in pairs (one slave state and one free
state so the number of slave state and free state Senators remain the
same, with Missouri and Maine being the first pair).
Before you decide whether this compromise favors the North or the South,
look at:
- Who has the population and thus the
potential for the greatest numbers for the House of Representatives
(provided in the link below)
- Who has the greatest
portion of the Louisiana Purchase following this Compromise and thus the potential
for the greatest numbers of states—with two Senators per state.
