Click here to see ONLY the stuff you need to do for the specific Deal written on your rubric.
As before, my purpose is not to hurt students’ grades but to be sure you understand what the
world requires when you talk or write about real things—like biology and
business and history.
·
My experience with students is all of you can do this—some of you just need to realize what you are not
already using evidence.
·
My experience with varied industries
and courses and decision making is all
of you need to be able to do this.
If you didn’t try this assignment, you can figure out some of the requirements for the Unit 2
Written Exam. You also can gain 5 points for listening to them (and a bit to
me).
Requirements: Extra credit for
students who show self-management, focus on their own tasks and do not
distract others, do not try to help
others unless they are asked to do that by the instructor, and follow
instructions so they complete all tasks correctly and quickly. |
If you tried this assignment, you
get 10 points extra credit for meeting the above requirements and successfully
doing what is on your rubric.
Requirements: Extra credit for
students who show self-management, focus on their own tasks and do not
distract others, do not try to help

instructions so they complete all tasks correctly and quickly. |
·
On your paper and your strip of your question, a
number written on each one
The same number should
be on the rubric. If not, tell me ASAP and don’t read further.
FYI: this is how I grade without knowing who the writer is.
· On some papers, color coding, especially with half-copy plagiarism where I have underlined the words you should have placed quotation marks around.
· Handwritten notes about why you are contradicting the source
§ These notes will only make sense if you compare your words with the author’s words
§ If you need help, I am glad to explain it to you
Take this offer seriously. If you don’t know what to do,
talk with me before this weekend. |
Toward
the bottom of your rubric you will see one of these “deals”:
·
Deal
– Page #
For the people who misunderstand assertion is not truth and the best truth you
can figure out is your best friend and best protector in life and jobs – Click here to
what may be the missing information for you and look at number 1
·
Deal
– Copy But Correct
For the people who misunderstand independent work – Click here to what may be the missing information for
you and look at numbers 2 and 3
·
Deal
– Find Truths AND Page Numbers
For the people who started writing
before they finished reading – Do this and you’ll also be able to prepare for
many profs’ tests and many decisions.
If you
do the deal carefully, your grade will be higher than the current grades on the
rubric and on your earlier written assignmentsl.
Note: if I realize I did not write something necessary, I will place an
announcement in the course that I will email all.
If
you do any of these 3 deals, you must also do these things
1. Sign out your paper
2. Return all of these things by
your 1st class day in the week beginning 11/20:
a. The rubric
b. Your original paper with its
grade strip
c.
If
the deal to Copy But Correct, you paper copied in
your own handwriting with CORRECT punctuation and use to avoid plagiarism
If you have Deal – Page # on your rubric, you must
do this:
1. Figure out accurately what the
missing or incorrect page numbers are
If I wrote where?, that
means I don’t think that is on that page so figure that out.
·
If
you are sure, show me.
·
If
you are a wrong in the page number, do what is step 3.
2. If something is not provable (the
textbook does not support what you wrote),
gently strike through those words with 1
line.
Strike through means you do this with your pencil/pen: strike through. I
must still be able to read what you
now realize is unsupported by the source.
3. Using a different color of ink,
strike through the incorrect page number and write the correct one.
If you have Deal – Copy But
Correct, you must do this:
1. Carefully figure out every place you half-copy plagiarized
or changed the author’s words.
2. On another sheet of paper,
carefully copy what you said and change only what was an error.
If you have Deal – Find Truths AND Page Numbers,
you must do this:
You did
not provide enough or the right information for the question asked so your job
is to list each fact you should have used and its page number. Each fact must
be:
·
over
3 words
·
and no more than 6 words.
Essential
to success with this Deal:
Use the index at the back of the book to find information on the question you
add. Look at the whole before you decide what you teach/write. |
· If 1 below was not the rules of life, science wouldn’t work. If science wouldn’t work, neither will history.
· If 2 and 3 below were not the rules of life and property in the US, people could fake that they had knowledge and thereby eventually destroy it.
If you use a fact in the author’s words,
citation is not enough; you must also use quotation marks.
What are the rules for citation and use of quotation marks? The rules vary
depending upon whether you are writing:
· A fact from the source in your own words
· A fact in the author’s words (in other words, you are quoting):
They have the same requirements for citation (although your professor may choose not to require it for an assignment). They have different requirements for quotation marks.

Specifics about this course:
·
If you use the author’s words, you
must use quotation marks. In this
course, you may not plagiarize or
“half-copy” plagiarize.
·
If you
quote, you also must use the rules for quoting. The Brain Trick (above) is your
best way out. If you still have
questions, please ask.
1.
You mark the bottom of the rubric with
the Good Habits for Evidence you need to change and you sign that you will be
checking that Good Habit’s Tip.
Where is the tip?
What if you need extra explanation?
2.
You return the rubric with your
signature and marks on the habits + your paper +
You can sign it out but if you don’t return all of it within the week, you lose
all possible points and the opportunity to replace those points and to get the
40 points extra credit..
3.
I compare what you marked about the
habits with what I marked on the rubric,
1. Didn’t read carefully. Skipped over sentences that meant that what they wrote was at best unsupported but at worst flat out untrue and unkind to the humans who lived that life.
2.
Perhaps assumed that collecting any words or copying any words would
be enough for an answer.
They have to be words that answer the question you were asked and you chose to
prepare for.
3. Perhaps assumed that bosses and this teacher will not read your stuff carefully.
· They will because they asked you to do something enough that they were willing to give you money for your time and expertise.
· I will because I worked in industry long enough to know that my doing this is not just good for your knowledge of history (which matters to me greatly), but also your survival in a rapidly changing world and workplace (which also matters to me greatly).
1.
You ask any questions you have about the above stuff.
2.
With some classes, I hand out the scantron
with the concepts written grade and pick it up.
3.
I hand out the papers to those who wrote the Unit 1 Writing
4.
You all look at your papers and you ask any questions that might
apply to everyone in the room.
5.
You fill out your section and ask questions if needed.
6.
I ask if anyone is done and you hand your papers to me.
Those who didn’t write the Unit 1 Writing can also leave.
7.
If anyone needs additional help, I answer individually outside of
class.
At the top of your rubric, you see 3 numbers which you can replace
if you prepare carefully for Unit 1 Writing Exam and follow the 5 Good Habits
for Evidence
·
Out of 10 points, a grade on the historical content (A = 9, B = 8,
C = 7 and so on).
If it is a lower grade than you want, prepare carefully for Unit 1 Writing
Exam’s content.
If you change how you work, I’ll change
this grade with the equivalent
Unit 1 grade (a 50 point assignment, 25 on content and 25 for good habits).
Equivalent: A B on a 25 point assignment is 20 and a B on a 10 point assignment
is 8.)
·
An all or nothing grade of 10 points on whether you followed the 5
Good Habits for Evidence
Why is all or nothing? Ask if you want to know.
If you want full points, prepare carefully for Unit 1 Writing Exam’s content.
If you change how you work, I’ll change
this grade.
·
A 1.11 as a placeholder if you did not yet quite qualify for the
40 point extra credit for doing the 5 Good Habits for Evidence the first time
Since you tried this time, you can have the same deal on the Unit 1 Written
Exam.
If you change how you work and
follow all 5 Good Habits for Evidence on Unit 1 Written Exam, I’ll change the 1.11 to 40.
